MFL
At Archbishop Sumner, the intention of our MFL curriculum is to develop an interest in and thirst for learning other languages.
We aim to provide meaningful linguistic and communication experiences, which take the school’s context and community into account.
In KS2, the pupils learn Spanish through the Language Angels program. Through this curriculum, the pupils build on their acquisition of vocabulary and understanding of etymology. We also teach pupils to communicate effectively with others and ensure they understand what it is to be a global citizen.
Pupils experience a range of vocabulary-building opportunities through exposure to Spanish songs, labels, and rhymes. Pupils who are native speakers are encouraged to contribute their knowledge and are involved in peer support.
Through careful delivery, children will develop a love of languages and a willingness to experiment and learn new languages, developing confidence to speak and communicate with others in Spanish.
As a result, children are encouraged to understand the relevance of what they are learning in languages and how it relates to everyday life and travel.
Verbal feedback and pupil interviews take place to ensure there is an impact on children’s outcomes and they feel positive about languages.
